Our Story

Horse Rescue In The Heart Of LI Wine Country

Here, amidst the warm atmosphere and bucolic setting of Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard lies a horse haven unlike any other on Long Island. Horses whose lives were at risk have, through love and dedication, been given a second chance. Here, they not only find sanctuary, but are given the opportunity to become ambassadors, helping to educate the public about the need for legislation to protect horses. In 2007, Sharon Rubin Levine and Richard Rubin, co-founded Baiting Hollow Farm Horse Rescue. Since that time lots of patience and loving attention has gone into nurturing these beautiful rescued horses.

Horse lovers of all ages visit us for a tour of our paddocks. While here, they will meet former race horses whose lineages trace back to such legends as Secretariat, Man O’ War and War Admiral, or come close to one of our beautiful Arabians. All were once marked for destruction and all now lead safe and secure lives.

In 2012, Baiting Hollow Farm Horse Rescue became a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Come see our equine friends and help us continue our efforts on behalf of these majestic animals. Be assured that your kind support would be tremendously appreciated.

Three Ways  You Can Make a Difference

1 Let Your Voice Be Heard – Stop The Slaughter

By reviewing our site, you can learn more about horse slaughter and abuse. You can navigate to the Take Action Now – Help Stop Horse Slaughter page on this site where you can very simply copy a letter and paste it into an e-mail which you can then easily send to your two Senators. This process takes only a few minutes and the letter requests that they support legislation to stop the slaughter of horses in this country while making it illegal to transport horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses. Your voice can help save the lives of young, healthy and sweet-tempered horses that are sold at livestock auctions in the U.S., and either killed in American slaughterhouses or inhumanely killed every day across our borders. It only takes a few minutes of your time.

  2Enjoy Horse Rescue Wines

Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard proudly features a selection of delicious wines which are dedicated to our rescue horses. In fact, 100% of the profits are contributed by BHF Horse Rescue to support our horse rescue effort. These wines are available in BHFV’s Tasting House, in select restaurants and stores and in BHFVs online store; Mirage, a delicious red blend, is named after our adored Arabian princess. It’s the perfect joining of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Angel is a slightly bold, partially oak-aged Chardonnay, dedicated to the horse that started it all back in 2007. She’s a beautiful Thoroughbred mare whose spirit touches everyone she meets. Savannah Rosé, made from luscious and fruitful Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, is named after our amazing Thoroughbred mare who we rescued in October of ’09 when she was only a year and a half. While enjoying this off-dry Rosé with its bright strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb-vanilla aromas and flavors, think of our Savannah. Order Now.
